Back To Basics - Back Issues

Back pain is very common these days and can cause a great deal of misery to the sufferer. Fortunately, serious or permanent damage is rare and with new methods and research surfacing all the time back pain can be cured.

If you have ever had an attack of back pain you know how alarming that can be. Even a minor back strain can be very painful, sometimes so painful that it would be natural to think that something dreadful might have happened.

Before allowing the panic to set in remember these facts:

Serious or permanent damage is rare.

There are lots of ways that you can help yourself.

What Is Your Back?

Despite what many people may think your back or spine is one of the strongest parts of your body. It is made up of 24 small solid bony blocks called vertebrae joined by discs to give it strength and flexibility.

Seven vertebrae make up the neck; twelve make up the thorax, or chest part of the spine. Five vertebrae make up the lumbar spine, or lower back. Strong ligaments reinforce the whole structure and large powerful muscles surround and protect it.

The human spine has a distinctive shape and in its upright state a normal spine works with all the vertebrae stacked vertically in three arching curves. These curves are there to disperse body weight in a balanced way.

Despite what you may think it is surprisingly difficult to damage your spine. Only a few people with back pain have a slipped disc or a trapped nerve and usually these tend to get better by itself. Very few back problems ever need surgery.

Most back pain comes from it being slightly out of condition. The working parts such as the muscles, ligaments and small joints are simply not moving and working as they should.

Back Facts

Most back pain is not due to any serious disease.

Fifty percent of people who get backache will get it again within a couple of years although this does not mean it is serious.

The long-term outlook is good. Acute pain usually improves within days or a few weeks.

For some the pain can last a long time but once again this doesn't mean it is serious. Even though this can be frustrating in time the pain will usually settle.

When back pain occurs what you do in the early stages is very important.

Resting for more than a day or two may not be the solution. Your back is designed for lots of movement. The sooner you get back to doing your normal activities the sooner you will feel better.

The people who cope best with back pain are those who stay active and get on with life despite any pain.
