Saving a copy of your personal data on the internet means you'll always have access to it and can download important files from anywhere. There are plenty of free services on offer, although these often come with restrictions, such as a limited allocation of storage space and a cap on the number of files you can upload or download at a time. If you want to back up a lot of content and be certain that it's being stored safely and securely, then a paid-for plan might suit you better.

Back up via email

One of the simplest ways to back up smaller files is to use Backup Elf. There's no download required - you simply compose a new email message, attach your files and send it to save@backupelf.com. The service securely stores messages and attachments, which you can access by going to http://backupelf .com. If you want to back up a lot of content and be certain that it's being stored safely and securely, then a paid-for plan might suit you better.

The free version gives you 100MB of storage. If you need more, you can upgrade to one of the paid options -Basic (1GB for $4.95 a month), Popular (5GB for $9.95 a month) or Premium (10GB for $19.95 a month).

Use a Gmail account for storage

Sign up for a Gmail account and you get over 7GB of free space that can be used to back up your files. You can simply email the data to yourself, or use the Gmail Drive Shell Extension (www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htrrO, which will transform your account into a virtual hard disk that appears in Windows Explorer and is accessible from your Desktop,

To set it up, run the installer, click the Gmail Drive entry in Windows Explorer, and enter the username and password of the Gmail account you wish to use. Tick Auto Login if you want the application to remember your details. You can drag and drop files to and from the virtual drive just like any other storage space, and delete any unwanted files.

Use ADrive

Sign up to ADrive (www.adrive.com) and you'll get a whopping 50GB of free storage for your data. You can upload, download and share files, and edit documents in Zoho (www.zoho.com). Certain features, including FTP support and the Desktop tool, are only available if you register for a paid account. However, you can try out the premium features for nothing by signing up for a 14-day trial.

Back up your photos and videos

Your hard disk is very likely home to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of digital photographs - irreplaceable memories that you'd be heartbroken to lose. You can back these up online by uploading them to sites such as Flickr (www.flickr .com), Picasa Web Albums (http:// picasaweb.google.com) and Facebook (wwwiacebook.com). If you're thinking of getting prints and photo gifts, you might want to use PhotoBox (www. photobox.com) to store your images. Videos can be uploaded to YouTube (www.youtube.com) and downloaded again when required in MP4 format. You'll find the Download MP4 option in the drop-down menu under the clip on your videos page.
