Backpacking EssentialsThe Pack

Backpacking is an extraordinary adventure sport! There is simply no other means to so fully experience the wild (at your discretion, needless to say!)

. I often specifically write about Grand Canyon backpacking, but this advice applies to any location.

In this write-up I will concentrate on the particular equipment which you will need to include in your back pack. Now that we have the suitable clothing, boots or shoes, and ruck, precisely what do we stuff it with? The 1st item you must make space for is water and food. If you invested in a ruck with some sort of hydration system, you must be sure that you have at a minimum 2-4 liters of drinking water for every person per three hours of backpacking. Even if it's chilly, you can dehydrate on the trail and will need to drink water regularly. On top of that, you should have a source of electrolytes such as a capsule or a gel pack. This will provide essential salts to keep your energy levels up.

The next most important item is food. The ideal trail food is dehydrated to save on room. It can come in plastic or tin packages, and believe it or not can be very tasty! Outdoor supply stores will offer dehydrated trail food, or you may go to a military surplus retailer and buy MRE's (Armed forces meals ready-to-eat). You need to have enough food for no less than two thousand calories per day per individual, as well as small snack foods you can eat while on the move. The trail is simply no place to be anxious about your diet!

Next is medical equipment. You will require a modest simple first aid kit with antiseptic and band aids and gauze, but you also will need a handful of outdoor specific items. If you are in an area with snakes, (particularly if you went on a Grand Canyon backpacking vacation) you will need to carry a dose of anti-venom. Gone are the days of sucking the venom out by way of a tube; now we have antidotes which can be applied and the fright of agony or incapacitation eliminated. Additional medical supplies comprise of bug bite creme, and burn lotion. This is an awkward spot to fit it in, however I do not mind stating it twice: take ample sun block lotion, regardless of your complexion!

Now that we have got the things you need to get by, let us take into consideration the things you will need to live on the trail. A change of clothing per day is generally a bit much. You will need spare sets of socks, not less than two per day, and every thing else can be changed at your individual convenience. For a 3 day getaway, you may get by with six pairs of socks, just one set of pants, an extra shirt together with a jumper in your back pack. If you find later that you have a lot of stuff, clothing is the area you can give up.

The very last essential bit of backpack equipment is the navigation equipment (I will mention safety in my next write-up). You will need: a very good laminated map of the area, a compass (traditional!), a GPS navigation unit, and an emergency locator. None of these are particularly expensive, however if you go missing a combination of at least 2 of these can get you home safely. You should also carry either a radio on the park ranger's frequency (call ahead for it) or a cellular phone that is left OFF with a completely charged battery pack. Remember the last time you heard of people lost in the woods for days at a time? They didn't have any of the above.
