. Backwaters in Kerala are chains of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian sea coast of Kerala. Venice of East Alleppey has a large network of canals that meander through town. Vembanad Kayal is Indias longest lake.

National Geographic Traveler placed Kerala among 50 destinations of a lifetime. Kerala houseboats which are known as Kettuvellam locals is one of the major tourists attractions in Kerala. There are more than 2000 kettuvellams in Kerala backwaters. Kerala government classified the house boats as Platinum, Gold and Silver. Traditionally, houseboats were used as grain barges to transport the rice harvested in the field alongside the backwaters. At the current scenario, houseboats converted to accommodate tourists and changed to tourism. The houseboats become floating cottages having accommodation with western-style toilets, dining area and a sit out at the deck side. It is very common that tourists spend the night on a house boat. Food cooked by the accompanying staff of the houseboat will be mostly flavor of Kerala. There are different type of house boats according to its patterns and can be hired according to family size or the visiting groups. Also there are regular ferry services that convert most locations on both the banks of the backwaters. There are number of resorts in Kumarakom around the Vembanad Kayal and the backwaters.

Boat races are very famous in these regions. The racing boat in local language is known as Chundan Vellams are narrow boats over 100 feets long. Vellamkalli or Boat races are occasions of great excitements and entertainment for the locals and the tourists. Most of the boat races are conducted in Alappuzha. The boat races are conducted during the Malayalam month of Midhunam. Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the most famous and prestigious boat race in the country.

The Backwater regions in Kerala are Kollam, Alappuzha, Kuttanad, Kottayam Kumarakam, Munroe Island, Kasergod, Thiruvallam, and Kozhikode.
