Sexual health is hard to discuss. Even harder when you have a vaginal infection but do not know what to do. Learn the difference between bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection or more serious venereal infection. Find out how to self-treat this irritating infection without a prescription and feel better in days. Below are some ways to treat yourself if you are suffering form bacterial vaginosis.
Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include itchiness, burning, discharge with a fishy odor, especially after sexual intercourse or unusual vaginal discharge, according to author Dr. Melissa Conrad Stppler. Most women and even doctors can misdiagnose these symptoms as a barm or yeast infection. The main difference is that a barm infection will respond quickly to treatment with a Monistat nitrate cream or vaginal suppository. However, if you have Bacterial Vaginosis, that treatment will be uneffective.
For diagnosis, you can either visit the woman's doctor or self-test the ph of your vagina. Self-testing kits are now available in the drugstore. The normal vaginal environment is somewhat acidic with a ph of 3.5 to 4.5. If you have a ph of 5.0 to 7.0 you likely have Bacterial Vaginosis or trichomoniasis.
Note: if you have changed partners or had unprotected sex, trichomoniasis, which is a sexually transmitted disease, could be the culprit and you should be tested by a woman's doctor, who can make that determination, Stppler recommends.
Once you have a definitive diagnosis, the quickest and cheapest treatment is as close as your pharmacy and health food supplier. Find powdered boric acid (often used as an eye wash) at the pharmacy or online. From your health food store, you can purchase empty gelatin capsules with the open capsule, scoop up the orthoboric acid and pack the gelatin capsule full. Make about ten capsules to start. Holistic gynecologist Dr. Andrew Y. Silverman recommends inserting one capsule vaginally as a suppository at night or before a nap. Do not use if pregnant, and never take orthoboric acid by mouth.
Do not be worried by the term "acid," people use orthoboric acid in their eyes; it works to restore the proper ph balance in mucosae. You can do this every night for three to fourteen days and you should find relief. Upon rising, you will have a liquid discharge, which is the orthoboric acid and gelatin melting. Use a maxipad if it discommodes you.
At the same time, you can supplement lactobaccillus acidophilus orally. This is the good bacteria found naturally in your system that can be cast off or thrown off by diet or medications.
