What is a ball mill and how does it function?
Ball mill is an efficient tool for grinding many materials into fine powder. The Ball Mill is used to grind many kinds of mine and other materials, or to select the mine.
It is widely used in building material, chemical industry, etc. There are two ways of grinding: the dry process and the wet process. It can be divided into tabular type and
flowing type according to different forms of discharging material.
The ball mill is a key equipment for regrinding. It is widely used for the cement, the silicate product, new type building material, fire-proof material, chemical fertilizer,
black and non-ferrous metal, glass, ceramics and etc.
Ball mill Manipulation Routine
1. Before start the ball mill, check whether every part of the ball mill is normal, including the connecting bolts, the lubrication of lubrication points, the driving device,
the protective equipment, and the connection of motor carbon.
2. Check whether there is barrier around the ball mills. Forbid persons standing near by the ball mills.
3. Press start button to start the motor and notice the change of electric current. The ball mills shouldnt be started for two times continuously. There should be more than
5 minutes between the first starting and the second starting. If it must be started for the third time, the ball mill machine should be checked by electrician and fitter
before started.
4. The ball mill shouldnt be started with other equipment at the same time to avoid the high current.
5. The water, ore and steel ball feeding to the ball mill must follow the operation manual. Overload is bad for the ball mill.
6. When the ball mill is running, the barrel body, the feeding water, the electric current, and the voltage should be checked and in normal condition. Once any problem is found,
it should be dealt with quickly
7. When the ball mill is running, it should be checked whether the bearing or the oil ring is lubricated and whether the temperature of bearing is normal.
Ball mills are used primarily for single stage fine grinding, regrinding, and as the second stage in two stage grinding circuits.
Ball mill operation
Ball mills operate either in open or closed circuit. Open circuit operation is best utilized when: Another stage of grinding follows the mill; Reduction ratio is small; Feed material is already fine and one pass through the mill produces the desired results; Product size control is not critical and oversize material can be tolerated in the product after the ball mill grinding. When size control of the final product is important, closed circuit grinding is the most efficient method of operation. The production of a higher quality product at a lower cost justifies the additional capital investment.Common wet grinding flowsheet include: Open circuit; Closed circuit with hydro cyclones; Closed circuit with vibrating screens; Two-stage variations of the above utilizing two ball mills in series.
