The Concord grape is probably one of the most popular choices of grape varieties for gardeners. This variety is very aromatic, dark blue or purple in color, has big seeds, and is quite sweet. Ephraim Wales Bull developed the Concord variety way back in 1849. He researched a wild grape variety seen in Concord, Massachusetts and that is where the name for these grapes originated. Growing this grape variety has also become a favorite among hobbyists and gardeners because the Concord variety is easy to take care of compared to other varieties. Its vines are also good for decorative or ornamental purposes because it is easy to train on trellises or a fence. It is often used to make jam, jelly, juices, pie, and candy. It can also be used to make dry wine.

Just like all grape varieties, growing concord grapes requires a lot of sunlight for optimal growth; this variety can also grow in cold climates and harsh weather conditions. This plant is not particular about soil, that's why home gardeners love this variety of grapevine. As with any other grape, the soil needs to be well drained to avoid drowning the plant and constant pruning, as always, is required. You might also want to apply fertilizer every year since all grapes grow well in fertilized soil.

This variety of grape is commercially produced largely because the Concord variety is a very versatile plant -- it can be used as a table grape and yet can also be used to make wine. Concord is quite famous for grape juice because of its sweet taste and many health benefits. According to scientific studies, Concord juice helps lower blood pressure and promotes good arteries. It also has antioxidants that lower the risk of cancer.

Just like other grape varieties out there, to grow these table grapes you need a trellis or a fence for support to strengthen its root system and canes. Pruning during early spring is also done every year for the plant to continue bearing sweet fruits. Protect the grapes from birds if they are rampant in your area. Concord grapes usually survive for 40 years with proper care.
