What is today known as Bangkok had its origins as a rather insignificant trade post town along the banks of the Chao Phraya River

. This was during the Ayutthaya reign. Following the burning of Ayutthayas capital, King Taksin moved the capital of Siam to what was called Thonburi. It was only in 1782 that Rama I moved the capital to the East of the river and called it Krung Thep Mahanakhon. This however remained the citys ceremonial name and Bangkok was what it was commonly called both nationally as well as internationally. It is believed that the name originated from the words Bang meaning on the banks of and Koh Koh meaning island.

The name itself denotes the geographical lay out of the city. It is no surprise that with the many rivers, streams and canals that branch out, in and around the city, that Bangkok is known as Asias very own Venice.
