Times have changed in the UK in that entertainment used to be the radio, the visit to theatre to live performances, perhaps a pantomime at Christmas. Television was a luxury, our only view of the screen was the cinema, and Saturday morning as a child was a series of cartoons, a few other documentary clips and perhaps a black and white cowboy film, the Lone Ranger, the Cisco Kid or Tex Ritter.
When the circus came to town it was a major event with posters of its impending arrival put on billboards and in shop windows well in advance. The demand was enormous with perhaps a week of evening shows and two matinees in the Big Top, the tent that not only provided a large sanded floor for the performers, man or beast, but also had temporary seating for spectators.
Circuses tended to be owned by families who although it was an itinerant lifestyle were fairly wealthy. In their time away from the work schedule, they could match the best in terms of quality clothing, shoes, barker shoes, nice cars and gold bracelets, rings and necklaces.
The barker announced the arrival of the circus and the town was alive.
It took particular skills to be a circus performer whether it was the high wire act, the trapeze artist, the lion tamer or elephant handler, the acrobat or clown.
The clown coordinated the shoe by involving himself in the periods between the acts to amuse the audience while the real spectacular acts produced things that young eyes had never seen before. The dangerous trapeze acts were as skilled as they were scary; the audience not realizing how much had gone on in rehearsal to perfect the act.
Acrobats performed skills of suppleness and agility that few could manage, and certainly none of the audience.
Circuses were a concept that had begun centuries ago, and the concept had been popular from its start of Roman times when the circus was a combination of amazing acts but also physical confrontation of fighters.
It was popular in a time before the television became common place and yet it still remained a way to amuse the family because a live event makes so much more impact and has so much more atmosphere than something on the screen no matter how professional the production.
The life of a circus performer was hard with little chance for performers to relax and take a break. The money may roll in, the chance to relax and socialize is limited because of the length of the season and the hard work and practice involved in perfecting the act. The occasional night off, nice suit and barker shoes, wife in her finest clothes but very quickly the barker announces back to work and it's off again in another town to amuse an audience of spellbound youngsters and their parents.
