Barnsdall Art Park A Living Monument To The Field Of Art

Aline Barnsdall was the granddaughter of William Barnsdall the man who drilled the second major oil well in the States

. Passionate about arts she arrived in the 1920s in Los Angeles- which was the countrys artistic and cultural hub. Wanting to create a theatre community, she chose Olive Hill a 36 acre area which overlooks the city of Los Angeles. Together with well known architect Frank Lloyd Wright she commissioned the building of a house incorporating her favourite flower Hollyhock House. This house was the centre around which the park she donated to the Los Angeles City Council was developed.

The 11 acre area has now developed to incorporate many buildings and facilities, all with the aim to improve and nurture the cultural and artistic knowledge of the people of Los Angeles as well as its visitors.

The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery with its 10 000 square foot space offers a venue for exhibitions in the areas of photography, sculpture, architecture, paintings, video and design.

The Junior Arts Centre is dedicated to empowering and nurturing love for art and a knowledge of various artistic fields in the young minds.

The Barnsdall Gallery Theatre gives the opportunity to showcase various performances from a wide sphere. Independent groups also use the space to perform annual events such as the Music Summer Camps, Shakespeare Company, Thai Festival etc. Many of these performances are offered free to the public in keeping with the purpose of the Barnsdall Art Park dream.
