Basement Water Damage - Some Helpful Tips
No one wants to think about having water in their basement
, it is just not meant to be there at all. There are several things that can bring about water in a homeowner's basement, none of them good. Basements should be bone dry with no water at all. However, there may be times when there is water in the basement that does cause damage.
Sometimes basement water damage occurs because of a flood. If an individual's home is situated in an area where there is the ability of water to run off during times of heavy rain, that person may find water coming into their home on a semi regular basis. If this is something that a person does see happening to their basement, there are some things that can be done to stop it from occurring. First, the most important thing is to try and determine where the source of the water is. Sometimes a homeowner can determine this for themselves but other times will need someone who is an expert.
Once the source of the water has been discovered there are some things that can be done. Waterproofing can sometimes help prevent basement water damage. Waterproofing is usually done by most contractors when building a new home. However, there are older homes that may not have had any of this completed. When a homeowner gets water in their basement, the damage can be significant, depending upon how high the water rises.
If there is a high level of water that flows in, any appliances in that water is considered ruined. This includes washers, dryers, freezers, etc. In addition, the home's furnace will most likely be damaged and may need to be replaced. To get rid of basement water damage, it may be necessary to have new drains placed in different locations in the basement floor or around the perimeter of the home. In addition to the drains, the homeowner may also have to install a sump pump that will draw the water out of the basement during times of heavy rain.
If a homeowner has a finished basement, there can be a lot more damage to content with. Carpets, drywall, etc. can all be damaged beyond repair. Sometimes if the basement waterdamage is severe enough, these items may have to be ripped out and replaced. This is a large expense for the homeowner.
Take a walk around the home, inside and outside. Sometimes there are loose downspouts and bad gutters that will need fixed. These two items can cause water to be drawn closer to the home, while they are intended to draw water away from the home and into the ground.
Basement water damage is nothing to mess with. If you let water lie it can develop into mold problems. Mold is nothing to take lightly. Mold can cause many different health problems and take a great deal of money to remove. Think about all of these solutions if your home is prone to getting water in your basement.
