Basic CPR Everyone Should Learn
Many times the first few minutes of a medical emergency are the most crucial minutes in a person's life and recovery. It's those first few seconds after an incident that will determine the extent of a patient's injuries, their recovery outlook, and how the air ambulance will handle the situation when they arrive. Everyone should have a basic knowledge of CPR and First Aid for emergency situations, whether you are a family member, friend of complete stranger to the individual in need.
Initially after an emergency incident, as you wait for the air ambulance and medical personal, First Aid and CPR might be needed for an individual. Without the proper knowledge, this person could face a lifetime of recovery, or perhaps even death, and it could be up to you to make the life-saving decisions.
We've all seen men and women take on amazing feats when they see others in need. They'll overturn massive objects including cars, run into burning buildings and exploding autos, and stare down extreme dangers with the inherent nature to help another in need. It's in these moments that CPR and First Aid are necessary, because after you've pulled that individual from a burning car and they've gone unconscious or aren't breathing, it means nothing to them if you can't bring them back.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
According to the American Heart Association, CPR is a combination of rescue breathing and chest compression delivered to victims thought to be in cardiac arrest. If more people knew the basics of CPR, more individuals would be alive today to thank them. The AMA states that about 92 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims die before reaching the hospital, but statistics prove that if more people knew CPR, more lives could be saved. Immediate CPR can double, or even triple, a victim's chance of survival.
CPR involves three steps:
Check the victim for responsiveness. After you've been witness to the incident, and attended to the victim, call 911 immediately with a detailed description of the scene and the event. For the most part, an emergency dispatcher can walk you through CPR as you wait for the air ambulance and medical professionals.
Title the head back slightly and listen closely for breathing. If the individual is not breathing normally, pinch the nose and cover the mouth with your own or a CPR device and blow until you see the chest rise. Do this twice.
If this does not resuscitate the individual, start chest compressions by placing your hands between the individual's nipples and compress and breathe at a rate of 11 to 2. Eleven chest compressions to two breaths.
If you are not comfortable with mouth-to-mouth resisitation, the AHA approved a new method for CPR in 2010; Hands-Only CPR. This involves step one from above, calling 911 and checking the victim's responsiveness, but instead of breathing into the victim's mouth you simply go straight into chest compressions. Compress the chest hard and fast, at a rate of 100 compressions per minute without stopping to include mouth-to-mouth CPR. Do this until the individual comes too' or until the air ambulance or medical professional arrive.
By having more people understand the basics of CPR, we can save more lives and be more prepared for emergency situations.
