. Your refrigerator is definitely one of those.

One of the few appliances that needs to run continuously, the refrigerator keeps your food cold day and night. Their breakdowns are surprisingly infrequent considering how hard they have to work, but when they do happen what do you do?

First of all, don't panic. Repair bills can be the worry when an appliance stops working, but it's not always the case of shelling out and losing your food, you can sometimes repair it yourself. If it is a basic fault then you will be pleased to know that a little patience and some basic information can be enough to solve the problem.

The first thing that you need to understand is that there are two basic, yet integral, parts of freezers and refrigerators: an evaporator coil and a condenser coil.

Using a liquid coolant, a motor and compressor, the condenser cools it and moves it to the evaporator. When it gets to the evaporator, the liquid-filled coil cools the air. The condenser is on the outside while the evaporator is found on the inside of a freezer or refrigerator.

Do-it-yourself repairs:

Discharing a capacitor - The most important, and very first step. Unplug the fridge and gain access to the capacitor through the back portion of your unit, or the front service panel and take it out of the motor/compressor unit (which looks like a large dry cell battery). Fasten a 20,000-ohm, 2-watt resistor to the capacitor terminals and it will be discharged. Repairs can then take place.

Disassembling the refrigerator - What tends to happen with refrigerators is that they are located in the upper section of the unit. The compressor, coil, fan and motor are all in the bottom section. Gaining access to the main parts tends to be a case of removing screws and pry out clips and removing the service panels. Alternatively, the refrigerator may be able to be tipped over and tested from the bottom up.

Test the power cord - Sometimes power cords to the unit can get frayed or burnt, and this can mean that it is faulty. To see if there is a problem, you can test the cord with a VOM set to the RX1 scale.

People are often surprised that a vast amount of the problems stem simply from opening and closing the door. Simple things such as removing frost and door maintenance can solve many problems with major appliances but at some times major repairs can be necessary.
