Total Hip Replacement: Its Indications
Total hip replacement is the placement of a severely damaged hip with an artificial joint
. It relieves the pain and functional disability of patient with hip problems, thus improving their lives. It is commonly indicated for patients with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and femoral neck fractures. In medicine, it has been considered as one of the most cost effective and successful interventions made. However, the recalls of hip replacement devices like the one manufactured by Johnson&Johnson are on the news lately. A number of recalls has been made by J&J on their ASR XL Acetabular Hip System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System due to an increasing number of reported
DePuy hip recall symptoms.
The principal indication for hip replacement is pain. According to a study, Indications for Total Hip Replacement dated 2006, surgeons and referring physician both agreed that pain (rest pain) and impairment of daily function like walking, climbing stairs and rising from a sitting position are the main indicative manifestation for them to recommend THR. A patient complains of pain on the hips and normally consults a physician, who may not be an orthopedic surgeon. To address the problem, he will then be recommended to have sessions with a physical therapist and be given with prescription drugs. Replacement is generally considered after pain becomes severe that it hinders normal routine despite the physical therapy and medications prescribed.
THR intends to relieve pain, improve mobility and enhance the overall quality of life of the patient. After the surgery, patient is to undergo a rehabilitation phase with a licensed physical therapist and will still be under medication. Avoiding bending the hip for more than 90 degrees and crossing the legs are only some of the limitation in mobility advised for the patient after surgery. These precautions aim to decrease the risk of implant dislocation and reduce hip flexion. After successful surgery and rehabilitation, the patient can expect a hip that is free or almost free of pain, has good motion, is stable and permits normal or near-normal ambulation.
Total hip replacement is not directly advised for patients having complains of pain on their hip. Medication and physical therapy is first recommended for them. After a detailed assessment and if pain level becomes severe that it gets in the way of the normal daily functions of the patient, surgery will then be recommended. Patient will know the end result and complications of the surgery before he agrees to proceed with the procedure. For added input on total hip replacement, please contact you health care provider.
