Bathing Needs of Different Pets
Most pet owners take some responsibility for keeping their pets clean. Even if using a groomer, there are times when you'll need to wash your pet or groom them at home. It's important to use the right types of products on your pet to avoid allergic reactions and get the desired results. While most people think of dogs when they hear the words groomer, cats and other small animals, such as guinea pigs and ferrets, sometimes need a bath and brushing in order to maintain optimal health.
Choosing the Right Products for Dogs and Cats
There is a ton of shampoos and conditioners available on the market. Some are designed to help fight fleas and ticks, while others are simply meant for cleaning and to help condition a dog or cat's skin and fur. As with most cleansing products, there are those that use mild chemicals to remedy problems and those that use natural substances.
Flea shampoos are known to have harsher chemicals in them to help kill fleas, ticks, and the eggs. But more owners want alternatives to the traditional chemical-laden shampoos and are looking for natural products that use extracts and herbs to help treat and fight fleas. If you notice that your dog or cat seems to dislike the traditional flea shampoo designed for all pets, consider switching to a natural cleanser that claims to be gentle on the skin and non-toxic.
If your dog or cat has sensitive skin, there are shampoos available that use oatmeal as a main ingredient to help soothe and condition the skin and fur. There is also lavender shampoo that's designed to help soothe pets that become nervous during bath time. Most formulas have one type for puppies and kittens and another for older animals.
Choosing Products for Small Pets
Some pet owners enjoy non-traditional pets such as guinea pigs, hamsters, and ferrets. While these animals don't need as much bathing and grooming as a cat or dog, an occasional bath helps keep them healthy and from getting too smelly. Owners should look for shampoos that are non-irritating. Ferret formulas are available on the market, but most puppy and kitten formulas will work well for small animals, too. Since these animals are usually kept inside, a strong flea formula isn't necessary and may actually be harmful. Owners of these pets should speak with their veterinarian if unsure about the type of cleansing products that work best.
