Be Extra Observant When Renting A Vehicle
So you're planning on renting a vehicle and you know that you will probably sign
that rental agreement without giving it even a second glance, after all you want to rent the vehicle. While some inclusions in these agreements might be exactly what you expect others may not and if you don't read that agreement, then you may be asking for a heap of trouble if something happens.
This is your chance to inspect the car and note what was previously damaged on the car before you took possession. This is important because you don't want to be paying for damages when you aren't responsible. Examine the car closely and note every dent, scratch and nick you see on the vehicle. By taking the time to document the damages you are protecting yourself. If the car comes back damaged and it wasn't noted on the sheet, you will be the one paying for the damages.
Vehicle damage can occur anywhere, under a variety of circumstances and these circumstances may or may not be your fault. If you are in possession of the vehicle when they occur, even if they are caused by no fault of your own, you are still responsible for them. And while many companies may overlook minor dings and scratches many other companies will charge you for whatever surfaces on that vehicle that was not marked off on the initial rental agreement.
Even marks caused on the rental vehicle by flying debris, a pebble kicked up off the road by a passing vehicle or damage as a result of road construction can all be attributed to you. And for the most part you can't dispute these damages. Most car rental companies aren't trying to get over but are merely trying to recoup the charge for these damages because they will cause the value of the car to decrease, costing them when they are looking to resell this vehicle in the future.
So the next time you find yourself renting a vehicle, don't rush through the paperwork, know what restrictions may be different than usual and spend a little more time inspecting the car and listing any prior damage. The extra time spent upfront might be worth it in the long run.
