Childhood obesity has become a serious concern in recent years
, with some alarming reports about how it is significantly affecting the health of our children. Obesity has been recognised as a vital public health issue due to its rising occurrence in children with the subject never being far from the headlines.
The excess body fat can be avoided by reducing the intake of high fat and sugary snacks and increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables. Kids however are quite reluctant to give up the sugary snacks for fruits and vegetables. Its a battle and one which parents as well as school teachers are desperate to fight. Give the vegetables names which appeal to them; think with a childs mind by, for example, naming a salad a nature feast. This will appeal much more to a young mind than a plain salad
During meal time you can use food to make interesting pictures such as a beautiful garden. You can use broccoli for trees, cauliflower for clouds, carrots and sweetcorn for flowers. Young children will love eating the artwork
At barbecue time you can bake bananas in its skin, corn on the cob, or vegetable kebabs; these make a great treat for the kids, and will have that authentic barbecue taste
Blend fruits into smoothies by dicing bananas in with some berries and yoghurt to make a nutritious drink
Create a star chart to help the children keep track of their daily fruit and vegetable servings and give them a star for every portion they eat. Give them rewards when theyve reached a set target
Use tomato sauce to make pasta dishes. Slip finely chopped vegetables into the sauce as it cooks then add sweet potatoes and carrots, which are easily absorbed and do not affect the sauces natural red colour
Mix finely chopped or grated vegetables into soups, gravies and rice dishes. Increase the amount of vegetables slowly with time.
Combine crushed vegetables into minced meat to make burgers and meatballs. The heavier the seasoning of the meat the more vegetables you can sneak in.
These tips should help find a way of introducing fruit and vegetables into even the most ardent vegetable-hating childrens snacks and meals. Always begin with small amounts, but you can slowly increase the vegetable content by a spoonful or two as they get used to the taste.
