Be Your Own Detective - Use Pretext to Get Information
One time when I was testifying in court, the defense attorney asked me if I had to lie to get the information I needed to make the case against his client. I told him that I did. My testimony was accepted by the court, because in the detective business, sometimes you have to work undercover or use pretext to get information. I have used pretext many times to get the information I needed, it can be easier than you think. That in and of itself is kind of a scary thought though.
Getting public records as evidence and surveillance video, photos or recordings is actually a pretty "clean" way to get information. The pretext in reality is a little con. Sometimes you have to misrepresent yourself to get to the truth. But bear in mind, you might be breaking the law and might have to pay the consequences. So be careful with what you do.
When misrepresenting yourself, never, never say you are a police officer, government official, or a clergyman. In most states you will be committing a serious crime. Often you do not have to say who you are. By the simple act of omission, people will believe you are someone else, even though you did not say so. You can often appear to be someone you are not without saying so if people believe that all the better for you.
You need to be comfortable in your pretext, so choose a character you are comfortable with. It is always best to know as much as you can about what you are investigating and the character you are pretending to be. Think of how many times you have given information to a stranger without really thinking about it that is what you are trying to accomplish.
Sometimes I have obtained information from banks by immediately asking for the supervisor when I spoke to the teller. I did my best to intimidate the teller in such a way they felt they were speaking with some high ranking executive within the bank, or maybe an examiner, and they did whatever they could to accommodate me.
When I was asked for identification after asking for a depositor's account information, I simply would become so obnoxious and threatening their jobs or likely advancement, they would believe their job was in jeopardy and give me the information.
Most of the people that you are looking for information from are not high level employees. They are usually clerks, account representatives, or bank tellers. They do not make enough money at their job to put up with any aggravation. If you approach these people correctly, you can quickly get a considerable amount of information from them. Sometimes it is better to be nice, others, obnoxious. Look around the person you are asking information from and you can often find the right button to push. They almost always leave clues in their "space."
Getting information by pretext takes a little getting used to, but after a while, most people find it to be quite fun.
