Beads Through The Ages

Beads have the connotation of being like sweets

. Yes, we love to collect, store, swap, and play with them. The only thing we do not do is eat them. What terrific fun; beads glamorous beads. These colourful, wonderful, inimitable items are absolutely divine; they are fabulous little pieces that have an eminently special feel and we can spend hours and hours simply gazing at them in wonder. Why? What is the special ingredient that makes them so utterly endearing? It is probably impossible to say and no-one really knows and that is what makes their clever magic all the more interesting and special.

The one reality we do know for sure is that beads have been used to create jewellery and adorn costumes since time immemorial. Time dawned and it seems bead dawned at the same time with an unequivocal air of individuality. If you were to look through the history books, right as far back as the Ice Age, you would discover small, indefinable objects crafted as natural beads. The very first beads that were discovered in ancient times date back to about 38,000 BC. They were made by cavemen and crafted from animal parts. As time wore on, beads were crafted as symbols of fertility and animal spirits in different cultures. As far back as that time, man was playing with jewellery in the form of beads made from natural sources around him such as animal bones, teeth, seashells and colourful stones. Now cast your mind and eye to the beaches around our coastline today. Everywhere you will see young modern children of this age doing something similar. How fascinating it is, inherent in our growth it seems, that we still resort to a habit of old.

In former times, these items man found were usually attached to cloth or plant fibres to form some of the most primitive forms of beaded jewellery. I am quite sure they derived as much pleasure as we do today. It is not just children who play with beads. Beads are perfect jewellery for adults and the variety and ubiquity of beads of all materials has certainly stood the test of time. They mean different things to different people and can symbolise so much to so many. This may be to do with a spiritual belief, cultural customs and social traditions. Beads, like many other easily obtainable items, have been used throughout history to adorn men and womens bodies, signifying beauty, power, and the human spirit.
