Beat the Symptoms of the Menopause
Women often fear the menopause, but my contention is that it's an inevitable transition from one phase of life to another and we should celebrate it joyously! Of course, if you're experiencing mood swings, hot sweats at night that drench the sheets, depression that leaves you feeling exhausted, and grief at the loss of your fertility and ability to bear children, you might wonder how joy can be obtained at this point in your life.
But the first thing is to accept that the menopause is inevitable; of course you will feel a degree of grief and fear about what it may mean in terms of the loss of your femininity and ability to bear children. But all transitions from one stage of life to another are accompanied by change, and the menopause is no different: what you need to get over the emotional impact of this change is an effective support group, which these days can take the form of a community on the Internet, or a more traditional support group of friends meeting once a week or more often to discuss what is happening to them, and to share their experiences. The value that you can obtain from such a support group comes from the fact that we all have a deep need to share our experiences, and to be in the company of people who understand what we are going through so this is the first stage of beating the symptoms of the menopause: get support.
Now although a support group can deal with the emotional (and, some would say, the spiritual) aspects of this midlife change for women, there are still a variety of physical symptoms to be dealt with. If you're feeling depressed or anxious, it's well worth going beyond a support group and getting some professional counselling from an expert who knows about the menopause this would usually be a mature female therapist or a female doctor who has experience of the condition. It's no use trying to share your experience with the man in your life, because if he is of the same age he will have his own midlife problems, and in any event he simply can't understand what your experience of living in a woman's body is like. For true empathy you need female support.
Additionally, you need to deal with the physical symptoms. It's well worth considering whether or not you want to take hormone replacement therapy. While this has received a bad press in recent years, much of what has been written about hormone replacement therapy is totally erroneous. It's actually a safe and effective therapy, and using the minimum dosages that are available today, it actually protects the body from the development of conditions which have previously been linked with hormone replacement therapy such as stroke, heart attack, and cancer. Rather than going into detail here I wouldlike to refer you to my blog, where I write extensively about the work of Dr Christiane Northrup, perhaps thepre-eminent female expert on the menopause today. She explains in great detail the protocols for safe hormone replacement therapy.
Finally, you need to attend your spiritual life: don't worry, that doesn't necessarily mean becoming Zen Buddhist or Tantric practitioner, or even someone who practices meditation everyday (although these may be very good things to do!). What it means in practice is finding a purpose in life that can occupy you and give you fulfilment as you grow into your elderhood. For some women, that is looking after the grandchildren; for others it is finding their own particular purpose and path in life that sustains them perhaps something that they've long wanted to do but not been able to because of their care for the family. It's entirely personal, and you can only work out what this is with some thought and effort, but this will be amply repaid with the sense of fulfilment that you obtain in life. Once again, Dr Christiane Northrup has written about how you can do this, and it's well worth studying what she has to say on the subject.
Using all these techniques will mean that the female menopause doesn't have to be a traumatic experience; instead it can be a joyous transition from one phase of life to another.
