Don't douche

Many women were taught that douching makes for good hygiene. Perhaps you were taught to douche before or after sex, after your period, or when you had a vaginal infection. Douching rinses away the naturally-occurring, always-present bacteria and yeast in the vagina. When the levels of those bacteria and yeast are disrupted, complications, Bacterial Vaginosis among them, often occur. The vagina has a natural restorative system for cleansing itself. The secretions we all experience throughout our cycles are normal.

So normal, in fact, that we should be able to monitor our own health by checking our secretions as long as we don't wash away those secretions by douching. Douching irritates and inflames the vagina. So not only will douching potentially lead to Bacterial Vaginosis or a yeast infection, it can also make you more susceptible to contracting a sexually transmitted disease like HIV. If you already have HIV, douching may even lead to an increase in viral replication! Save yourself the time and money. Allow your vagina to naturally balance itself. Don't douche!


Minimize Stress and Quit smoking

Hormones are the messengers between the various systems in your body. Stress significantly affects your hormone levels and your various biological systems, including your vagina.

We've all experienced a crash after a hectic week. The boss at your first job is grating, the customers at your second job stress you out, you don't have time to eat healthily, you're running on coffee because you can't get enough sleep, and maybe you're smoking more than usual to cope with the stress...

A healthy body builds itself on the compounds consumed in healthy food and drink. Gorging on sugary snacks might feel good for a few minutes, but the harmful bacteria in the vagina that you're trying to control will thrive on that sugar well after you've satisfied your sweet tooth. Cortisol is the stress hormone often responsible for many problems like weakening of the immune system, weight gain, moodiness, worsening anxiety, impaired learning, and increased blood pressure.

Use a condom

Using a condom every time you have sex, even in a monogamous relationship, will reduce your risk of suffering through another bout of Bacterial Vaginosis. A study published in November, 2007 found that women who used condoms every time they had sex were 45% less likely to develop Bacterial Vaginosis compared to women who did not use condoms. Condom use was found to be even more helpful for women whom already had a bacterial imbalance, decreasing their risk for developing Bacterial Vaginosis by 63%. Avoid condoms with spermicide, however, as spermicide can cause significant vaginal inflammation.

Avoid irritants like bubble baths and scented soaps

Avoiding irritation of your vagina should be your major concern in preventing Bacterial Vaginosis. Try switching to an unscented soap. I know we all love our scented body washes and lotions, but it's proven that strong scents irritate. Avoid scented bubble baths, gels, scented tampons, vaginal powders, vaginal deodorants, or scented toilet paper. Spermicidal gel and harsh soaps are also major no-nos. Try using a laundry detergent that is unscented, too.


Stop Wearing Thongs

Thongs are known for their complicity in the development of Bacterial Vaginosis. Thongs rubbing against the anus during the course of your day will introduce harmful bacteria present on the anus to the vagina. The synthetic materials in your thongs don't readily absorb discharge as cotton does. This intensifies the dangerous bacteria-filled environment present around your vagina. Remember, we want the vagina to have air and the ability to clean itself with secretions. We need to allow the vaginal discharge-the washing away of harmful bacteria-to help to achieve and maintain a healthy balance.

There are even more natural ways to prevent future cases of BV. Read as much as you can and incorporate positive changes into your lifestyle. In doing so, you may be able to live without any more cases of BV!
