Becoming A Golfer
Since golf is not as strenuous a sport as something like football or basketball
, it can be played by a wide range of people; even professional athletes from other sports take to golf during the off-season and after retirement because it is not too hard on the body, and it is still a fun way to
compete.
When watching golf, it seems as easy as hitting the ball with a club, but the sport is much more difficult to conquer than it seems. Golf takes practice, patience, and endurance. Playing 18 holes can take upwards of four hours when with another person, so being able to stay on your feet and walk
a few miles is important.
There are many things that go into hitting a good ball while on the golf course, and the only way to know how to do that is to practice on the driving range. Each one of the clubs in your bag has the ability to send the golf ball different distances, and your strength and technique will determine
how long that distance is.
Before you go out and try to tackle the course your first time, make sure you go to the driving range enough times to know how far you can hit the ball with each club. This will save you a lot of time when you do tee up and know which club will take you to the hole.
For the pros, the most amount of practice time is done on the greens. It is great accomplishment if you are able to drive the ball 400 yards down the fairway, but when it comes down to it, what you do on the green is what will win you the game.
No two greens are the same on a golf course, each has its different slopes and slippery areas, and it is up to you to know where those areas are and where the ball will roll when you putt. Since the golf ball is so small, and you're tapping it so softly with your putter, it will roll any way the
slope takes it.
It is important to take your time when reading these slopes because your ball will be easily directed by their patterns. When putting make sure you give the ball enough power to go to the hole, but not to much power where you over-shoot and have to re-putt from even further away.
This can be long process if it's your first time trying to read the greens, but it is a great feeling when your ball finally sinks into the hole. After starting from the the smallest club (the putter), start working on your wedges.
The sand wedge and pitching wedge are designed to hit your ball high and short. These are for getting out of bunkers or chipping onto the green when you're only a few yards away. These are important clubs to master, because they will be the foundation on which you will learn to hit will all of your
irons.
The irons are used to get out of the ruff (the long grass on both sides of the fairway), hit on the fairway, or even used off of the tee box if it is a short hole. There should be seven irons in your bag, or eight depending on your set, and they heads of each are crafted with different angles.
The wider the angle, the shorter the ball will travel. The highest club number, 9, has the widest angle of the irons, and will send the ball the shortest distance; the lowest number, 3 (or 2 depending on your set), has the smallest angle and will send your ball the farthest.
After learning the irons, move on to the woods. There is typically only a 3 and a 5 wood in a set, and just like the irons, the smaller the number, the farther it will send the ball. Learning the the woods will help you learn how to use the driver, which is a larger version of these clubs.
The driver will obviously sent your ball the farthest of all the clubs, but it can be the trickiest club to learn how to control. Many people, even the pros, have difficulty being consistent with the driver, even the slightest pull will send your ball far right into deep grass.
Once learned, golf can be a very rewarding sport that teaches life lessons that will not be found in any other game.
