If one occurs in your area, it may severely test your emergency preparedness. It is important that you protect your family from the worst of disaster by having preparedness kits that are ready to go in a moment's notice.
Earthquakes can strike at any moment, no matter how inconvenient, whether day or night. If you live in a populated area, there may be many deaths, injuries, and thefts that you will have to deal with.
These emergency kits may save a life if you simply have a few of the basic medical supplies and other necessities needed for treating injuries. Even though earthquakes are always a dangerous thing, there is much you can do to enhance your chances of surviving both the earthquake itself, and the aftermath.
To properly prepare your family, there are several steps that you can follow. The first is to learn about what specific things might become hazards within your area.
These things may be factories that will release toxic gases in an earthquake, sharp objects, or possible landslides. Learn what the community's evacuation plans are, their warning signals, and what your family should do in various circumstances.
Then, meet with your family to create a family disaster preparedness plan. This plan should include a preparedness kit for every family member, where they will be stores, and what will be put in them.
These kits should have enough supplies in them to provide for your family's needs for two weeks. These supplies should be easily transportable and placed in backpacks or duffle bags.
Be sure to make copies of important documents and place them in a waterproof bag in the duffel bag. Make an additional bag to stick in the trunk of each car just in case you are on the road when a disaster strikes.
Talk about what you learned about the community signals and what should be done in each situation. Be sure to choose a place outside of your home to meet if there is an emergency, like a fire.
It is also good to select a meeting place outside of your immediate neighborhood in case you cannot get to your home. In addition, decide on an out-of-state family member or friend who each family member will contact if you should become separated and unable to meet at the decided points.
Then, make it easy for family members to implement these things in an emergency. For example, place these emergency contact phone numbers next to all of the phones or make sure that everyone has the numbers entered into their cell phone.
After this you can make it a game of looking for things in your home that could be dangerous to people in the household. These could be things that can move, fall, break, or catch fire.
If possible, adjust their position so that they are no longer dangerous. Install other safety items such as smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and fire extinguishers.
Make sure everyone knows where they are and how to use these safety tools. Before the end of the meeting, rest assured that all of your children can judge a situation and know when and how to can call 911 or another medical number.
If you have young children you may want to role play the situation of a fire and where they should meet outside. Review what the other meeting places, phone numbers, and safety rules are.
Then, make sure everyone knows where to find the emergency kits. Following this meeting, be sure to maintain appropriate safety standards.
Test the smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector monthly. Be sure to test and recharge the fire extinguisher according to how the manufacturer recommends.
Change the batteries if needed. Continue to hold role plays depending on the amount of review your children will need.
