The pesticides and insecticides available in the market are not very useful since these critters get scattered when these sprays are used, hardly causing any serious damage to them. Bedbugs are tough to kill as they can proliferate under any conditions and even survive extreme cold temperatures.

Some bed bug remedies recommend applying baking soda or rubbing alcohol on mattresses and sofa. This does absolutely nothing to kill them.

Similarly, other home remedies such as keeping lavender sachets all around the house to repel the insect, and coating beds and furniture with petroleum jelly to prevent those wingless creatures from climbing onto them have proven to be only partly helpful and none of them are good long-term solution since one needs to exterminate bedbugs to prevent further damage.

One of the better and proven bed bug remedies is applying extreme heat to the insects. If all belongings are washed in very hot water, and bags, furniture and carpets vacuumed vigorously and regularly, then you might still be able to kill these hardy pest. However, this doesn't guarantee total extermination in the house. Therefore, professional steamers are used on big items like furniture and infested mattresses to further eliminate them and their eggs.

Another remedy that is both useful in preventing bed bug bites and killing them is to encase the mattress in specially designed allergy proof mattress covers. Prevention can also include using duct tape on all sides or legs of the bed. The bed also needs to be kept away from the wall to prevent those little bloodsuckers from crawling up the wall onto the bed.

Even though exterminators are the best option to properly handle a bed bug infestation than any other the natural remedies, many home owners try to leave this option till the last since hiring a professional exterminator can be quite costly. However, if the infestation of bed bugs is serious, extermination by professionals should be considered as the best option to get rid of these nocturnal pests.
