Bedroom Air Quality - 5 Ways To Keep Your Bedroom Air Ready For Sleep

At the end of each day when you enter your bedroom

, you should expect an atmosphere that makes it a relaxing place to be. One of the most crucial elements that can determine whether a bedroom is conducive for sleep is the air.

Here are 5 things that you can do that will help your bedroom air stay as fresh as possible, thus making it easy to awake refreshed, rejuvenated, and eager for another day.

Reduce Dust Mites--Unfortunately, dust mites are a fact of life. You can greatly reduce the dust mite population in your bedroom by washing your linen at least once a week in water that is 140 Fahrenheit or hotter.

Adjust your water heater so that the hot water is heated to the proper temperature. Take extra care that this does not scald you when using water in the sink or bath. Covering your mattress and pillows with dust mite covers will also reduce their count.

As soothing as wall to wall carpet can feel under the feet in a bedroom, it makes a perfect hideout for mites. They then go airborne when with normal movement through the room, and can then be breathed in by you. Area rugs are a better choice as they are easier to clean and keep clean.

If you have even the slightest sensitivity to mites, it can produce all sorts of symptoms that can cause you to have restless and fitful nights or just plain sleepless nights. Keeping the air clear of mites can make a tremendous difference in how inviting your bedroom really is.

Keep Fragrances And Odors Out--Dumping clothes immediately into the washing machine that are full of odors such as smoke, paint, oil, or diesel is a good idea. Doing this rather than storing them in a clothes bin in the bedroom prevents these offensive smells from evaporating into your bedroom and spoiling the air quality.

It's also a good idea to use fragrance free laundry products for bedroom linens and towels. Using fragrance free cleaning products is also a good idea particularly if the bathroom is connected to the bedroom.

Rethink Where Your Pet Sleeps--We all love our pets, but if you notice that having your pet sleep on the bed or even in the room with you at night causes symptoms like watery eyes, sneezing, and congestion, maybe it's time to rethink where you pet sleeps. Go slow with this for both your sakes. But try making a special pet bed that is separate from your bed. If this helps, that might be as far as you have to go. If putting this bit of distance between you does not seem to make a difference, experiment with sleeping in separate rooms for a couple of nights.

Choose Furnishings Carefully--If there are particulates in your air, when they fall they will land on the furnishings you've chosen. Draperies, upholstered furniture, and carpet all make great places for dust to gather. Surfaces that are more easily cleared of dust are wood floors, vertical blinds, or draperies that can be easily washed periodically and hung again with little effort. Micro suede and soft leather are great options for furniture that can be wiped downed and/or vacuumed.

Use A Bedroom Air Purifier--Using a bedroom air purifier is a proactive and non-invasive wear to keep the air clear all the time. A cleaner with both HEPA and carbon based filtration gives you the best of both worlds.

The HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting air purifier is the technology that is best at removing sub micron size particles including dust, dust mites, pet dander, bacteria and viruses. A cleaner that also contains a carbon based filter will remove any lingering odors, chemicals, or smoke from your bedroom.
