Before Storage Shed Plans - Building a Ramp

In an ideal world, storage sheds would come with ramps as standard. Nothing is more irritating than getting your brand new shed, preparing to lift all your heavy items, and realising it's a lot harder than it looks!

Well, aside from asking someone else to give you a hand, you can make your life a lot easier by building a ramp.

Now, to build your ramp you have to make a preparation list. You'll need two breeze blocks that you can pick up at a hardware store near you - if you are in doubt as to whether they sell them, give them a call and they can tell you.

Next, you'll want a bag of ready mixed concrete, or alternatively a bag of ballast and a small bag of cement. This is for the purpose of forming your slope, using the breeze blocks as supports.

Now get a length of 2 x 4 and plywood for the sides of your ramp. You'll want to gauge how long you need your wood. Of course, the longer your ramp, the longer the wood you need. This wood not only serves to make your ramp look presentable, but it secures the whole structure of your ramp.

You may think that having breeze blocks hidden away, submerged within concrete, could seem a little redundant but they are very important for the same reason that concrete has stones in it.

Stones (or breeze blocks in this case) solidify the whole structure by giving the cement in the concrete something extra to grip onto.

You may be aware that ice with sawdust lasts longer and stronger than ice alone - it's the same principle.

Take you time to mould your concrete step the way you want it, if you have an old spirit level you can use it to help you get a nice finish. At this point you'll also want to position the 4 x 2's horizontally on top of each other, sawing and going as high as you need to.

Of course, you don't want to take too long because it's concrete!

Once the concrete has solidified overnight you can hammer the plywood down onto the slope and hey presto!

Ramps are convenient, not just for getting heavy items into your shed. They can be used by wheel chair users, wheelbarrows, and ride-on lawn mowers.
