Before Style Sheet Languages Were Used

CSS or Cascading Style Sheets is considered as one of the most widely used form of styling language in web development

. However, before CSS became a popular method for creating a website, or any other style sheet languages, there was a method in which many web experts in the past chose to use compared to the use of style sheet languages. This is the use of HTML Table tags.

Table Web Design

HTML was originally designed as a semantic markup language intended for sharing scientific documents and research papers online. However, as the Internet expanded from the academic and research world into the mainstream in the mid-1990s, websites became even more media oriented, in which many graphic designers sought for ways on how to improve their websites appearance by manipulating its elements. It was in this time that style sheet languages, such as the first CSS, was developed and introduced for use in web development.

However, according to many web design Manila experts, there were a number of problems regarding the use of CSS and other style sheet languages, such as the limitation for support in major browsers, lack of familiarity with CSS, as well as the lack of knowledge of the advantages of using CSS and any other style sheet languages.

Although style sheet languages were used for web development, a new trend became popular in web development which eliminates the use of a style sheet language and relying mainly on HTML tags. This is with the use of HTML Table tags which started the table web design era.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Table Web Design

According to Web design Philippines, the advantage of using Table HTML tags compared to the use of style sheet language is its simplicity, particularly when a number of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) applications were developed which supported this trend.

However, the disadvantage of using Table HTML tags is that web pages designed with tables nested within tables may resulting in large HTML documents which use more bandwidth than documents with simpler formatting.

Re-Introduction of Styling Languages

As the dotcom boom receded in 2001 and the Web development industry shrank, many web developers sought for ways on how to design a website without the use of Table HTML tags. This is when CSS and other style sheet languages were re-introduced in web development.

Compared to the use of Table HTML Tags, the main advantage of using styling languages is it saves more bandwidth. CSS design produces web pages with fewer HTML tags used purely to position content. This normally means that the pages themselves become smaller to download.
