Before You Get A Hearing Test, Learn What Could Cause Temporary Deafness

If you think you may need a hearing test, you should go to your doctor to find out how to proceed

. It may turn out your general practitioner will find an obvious problem with your ears, and with some treatment, you will be able to hear clearly again. It may also turn out you are just gradually losing your ability to hear, and the only answer is to get hearing aids. But during your first visit with your physician, you should expect to have your ears physically inspected for certain conditions.

One thing your doctor will look for during the exam is discharge coming from the ear. This could be a sign of infection, which should be able to be treated. It may also mean the eardrum has been perforated, in which case usually only one ear would be affected. This issue can be caused by something being stuck in the ear, or even trauma to the head. Sudden loud noises can also perforate the eardrum. No matter what the cause of the issue is, you will need to be treated by your physician, who may give you antibiotics to clear up the problem. In many cases, you will be able to hear again in a few months with the eardrum heals.

There are other issues that may cause temporary loss of your ability to hear. For example, a bulging eardrum involves infected fluid in the middle ear, while a retracted eardrum means the fluid is present but not infected. In either case, once your practitioner notices the problem, you can get the treatment you need. You may still need a hearing test after that if you cannot hear as well as you used to, but most patients can recover with time.

You may even find out your sudden deafness is simply due to earwax in one or both ears. Sometimes the wax hardens and blocks your ability to hear. The good news is your physician can get it out, and you should be able to hear again. If you still notice some deafness long after treatment, it may be best to get a hearing test to find out if there is another issue.

Fortunately, many clinics offer tests like this. Your doctor can refer you to one if he or she cannot accurately diagnose and treat you. Then you can at least get some peace of mind, especially if it turns out your hearing loss is minimal or can be corrected easily. The only way to get results is to set up an exam to ensure your ears are in good health.
