Raising your voice at your dog is pointless, because he will not understand you and will simply become afraid of you. It is much better for an owner and dog to have a happy and functional relationship.

When obedience training your dog, it is important that he have no distractions. It is therefore recommended that you take him to an empty lot or park where he won't be readily distracted. The two of you can then concentrate on his training. Tell him firmly but nicely that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when it is down say sit and tell him he's a good boy then award him with a treat. Continually commanding your dog to sit and then rewarding him with a treat, will eventually turn your dog into one who no longer needs to be rewarded for following this command.

Getting him to stay is another matter, you'll probably need another person for that.

To sit him still is a big accomplishment (when he is able to do so) and be sure to have a friend nearby to hold on to him securely. Give him the stay command as you are walking away from him, and at the same time let him see you hold your hand up (In future when you hold up your hand he should realize that he has to stay without your shouting at him to stay) then give it a few seconds and let your friend release him, when he comes to you make him sit and tell him how clever he is!
