from shops if you wish to purchase a lovely quilt from the market, then you will need to spend lot of money on it. However, if you have some basic idea on quilting you could easily make your own handmade quilts at home. It can also be a wonderful pastime activity that can help you to create other clothing items for example bed coverings which can be used to decorate your home. If you're a newbie, learning how to make handmade quilts is not an insurmountable endeavor. Read this step-by-step guide so you'll know exactly what to do in making quilts.
1. The first and foremost step is to think about the pattern. Complete quilts generally have patterns with instructions for separate blocks which will be sewed together into rows. There are a number of free quilt patterns offered. If you are creative, you can make your own pattern very easily. Basically, the first step is to determine which will be the core block. Search internet resources for quilt block patterns and find out every block's final dimension. Calculate how many rows and columns you will require to create a quilt of the desired size.
2. Purchasing the fabrics will be the next step. Numerous types of fabric materials are available. Based on the pattern that you have decided upon, choose the type of fabrics that goes well with it. Choosing cheap cotton fabrics on your first attempt will be a good idea. Also, be sure that you purchase fabric for the quilt backing.
3. You will have to purchase quilt batting. This is something which goes between the quilt top and the quilt backing. Choose batting capable of meeting needs of how closely together the final project should be quilted.
4. Using a rotary cutter and mat, start cutting the fabric into quilt pieces and while doing so you need to be extra careful and follow the pattern instructions properly.
5. The next step is to sew the quilt top and then you should start sewing the individual squares. Be sure to keep to the pattern. The individual squares should be carefully sewn together to create a row. Then, sew every row together. If necessary, you can even add borders to all the four edges. Press the seams with an iron.
6. The next step is the actual quilting process. On a clean flat working surface, lay down the material for quilt backing with the print side facing down. To keep the backing material firm over the surface, fix it with tapes. Next, you need to place the quilt batting over it. Then, put your quilt top, right side up, above the batting. Attach the three layers using safety pins, securing a six-inch space in between them. Use either free motion quilting or stitch in the ditch technique to quilt your project.
7. The final step is adding the binding. Create binding strips, 2.5" wide by the perimeter and add a foot. The fabric needs to be ironed well to remove any wrinkles. The binding strips should then be sewed over the quilt's front, flipped over to back and then sewed in place using hand stitch.
By understanding these basic steps on how to create handmade quilts, you can now start doing your first quilt at home.
