Tequila Sunrise
Tequila, an alcohol, is well-consumed all over the world
, and not just in its native country of Mexico. It can be mixed into an array of cocktails, even though it is mainly drunk straight as a shot. Various drinks that are mixed using this agave-based liquor include, the Matador, the Paloma, and the Margarita. However, it is the Tequila Sunrise that has a name that has been lent to pop culture mainstays over the course of the last few decades.
The Sunrise cocktail is made in two different ways. The original recipe called for tequila to be mixed with lime juice, soda water, and creme de cassis, a liqueur made from blackcurrants. The modern (and more popular) recipe just calls for the agave alcohol to be mixed with orange juice and sweet grenadine syrup. In both cases, the ingredients must be carefully layered in order to achieve the desired visual effect; the name comes from the yellow-to-orange or red layering in the glass.
The first version was created sometime in the 1930s or 1940s by Gene Sulit, who served it at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel. The more common recipe was invented by two men, Billy Rice and Bobby Lazoff, in the 1970s at a restaurant in California. The Florida Sunrise is just one of several variations, and uses equal measures of orange and pineapple juice in its formulation; the Tequila Sunset, alternatively, substitutes the grenadine with blackberry brandy.
The name 'Tequila Sunrise' has become synonymous with more than just alcohol over time. It's also the name of a popular song by southern rock band The Eagles, released April 17, 1973. It was written by members Don Henley and Glenn Frey. According to Don, the title was a source of dispute at first, as his writing partner was unsure about it; the cocktail was quite popular at the time, and there was concern about becoming clich. However, the song is not about the beverage; the name connotes a person that has been drinking agave liquor all night, until sunrise finally dawns.
Even a film wears the name as its title: 1988's 'Tequila Sunrise'. Written and directed by Robert Towne, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind 'Chinatown', it was a commercial success but was met with mixed critical reception. It told the story of a former drug dealer named Mac (Mel Gibson), who was trying to lead a straight life; he is friends with a detective lieutenant, Nick (Kurt Russell). The two men have a close relationship despite the acknowledgment that one will arrest the other if he finds evidence of any new drug use. In the film, Michelle Pfeiffer plays a restauranteur that the two become enamored with, until a frightening drug lord (played by Raul Julia) comes to town and threatens everyone.
