The start of a New Year is a time of year for making resolutions and promises we
hope to keep and as a sports coach this time of year can really help reinvigorate and inspire your team and athletes. As a sports coach you may want to take time at the beginning of the New Year to review how your team or athletes are performing and see how they can improve in the New Year. Some sports such as Football may be half way through their season by the time New Year rolls around but this is still a good time to get your team together and go over how they are performing and see where any problems lie. One great way to plan ahead for the future is to get the players to make New Years resolutions as a team. Many people make resolutions at the beginning of the year with hopes of sticking to them, as a team you are more likely to stick to them as everyone will be motivating each other. Resolutions could be to score more goals or points in each game, improving team statistics or simply achieving higher standings in leagues or competitions. Since these goals are something the whole team will no doubt want to achieve then it is a good motivator for the team and you as their coach too. Another good way to motivate your team in the New Year is to review how they have performed in the past year and see where the team can improve in the New Year. Many sports coaches will use the New Year to talk with each player or athlete to check on their progress, identify any areas in which they could improve and set targets or goals for the year ahead. Many coaches in particular sports will look to sign new players or scout for new talent over the New Year too; this can be to prepare for the year ahead or to strengthen the team mid way through the season. Sometimes as a result of the review of their team they may have identified a position or aspect of the team that needs strengthening and so the New Year could be the perfect time to make a move for a new player or athlete. Another consideration is to ensure that in the New Year you avoid any injuries or problems by making sure that your training sessions and actual competitive events are handled safely and you make sure all players are not at any risk. If you do this then hopefully your team or individuals will succeed in 2010 and your coaching career will continue to improve.
