Behaviour Problems Begin In The Brain - Neuroplasticity Can Break Lifelong Destructive Behaviours

How are behaviour and the brain connected? What is neuroplasticity

? And how does this new buzz word relate to the field of mind science?

Behaviour and the brain are intricately connected because your brain works by storing actual and imagined events (memories). Your brain then retrieves (remembers) these events individually or in groups that are known as patterns. Patterns form when images are connected in memory and the brain recalls them together. These brain patterns are another way of talking about behaviour.

For example, you see a picture of a pizza and you feel hungry, or you are late for work and you have a bad feeling from a time in the past when you were late and got in trouble. A pattern can form from a single occurrence, typically when your emotions around that event are strong. Without strong emotions, it often takes many occurrences for a discernable pattern to form, if one forms at all. Everything from productive behaviour, to behaviour problems, and even more complicated behaviours such as destructive behaviours, are reactions formed from past events that have created patterns.

In everyday life, it is easy to see how discord, behaviour problems and destructive behaviours would occur. As an example, let's consider a married couple. If one of them promises to do something and forgets, the other may experience feelings of disappointment and mistrust. It is unlikely that a discernable pattern will form the first time this occurs. However, if that person forgets again and again, at some point the other partner's brain will form a pattern that connects the person to the feeling of disappointment and mistrust. Behaviour problems such as destructive behaviours are thus brought into the dynamics of family life.

This is how behaviour and the brain are intertwined. This has profound implications on our lives. It means that we may act based on patterns that are not accurate, not appropriate and not of our choosing, whether we like it or not.

This is why recent breakthroughs in mind science, with the discovery of neuroplasticity, offer such hope for people interested in emotional health. We believe that these discoveries in the field of mind science are at the genesis of emotional health.

Let's go back to the question of what is neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain's capacity to change or modify its structure and its function through mental experience. It was once assumed that around adulthood, the brain became fixed and we could not really learn new attitudes or behaviours. This breakthrough regarding "what is neuroplasticity" disproves this old adage. The brain having neuroplasticity means that the brain's billions of neurons can be rewired. This makes it possible for people to learn new behaviours and dissipate behaviour problems such as destructive behaviour.

Neuroplasticity is one of the most significant discoveries in the fascinating field of mind science, and it opens up amazing possibilities for reaching emotional health. For example, psychiatrist Jeffrey M. Schwartz demonstrated that people suffering from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be cured and potentially gain emotional health.

So what is neuroplasticity making possible? We can now see that these developments in the fields of behaviour and the brain give us control over our reactions and the ability to change our counterproductive behaviour into productive behaviour.
