Benefits Of Choosing A Sonography Career
There are many benefits of choosing a sonography career
, from the job options to the career outlook to the pay to the personal rewards. There are three types of sonography you can go into: general radiology, nuclear medicine and diagnostic medical sonography/ultrasound. The salary and job options will depend on the career path you choose, the amount of education or training you undergo and the location you work in. But regardless of these factors, it is rewarding to know that you are helping people with a job that will be necessary to the medical community for years to come.
The median salary for sonographers is just under $62,000 a year according to the SDMS Salary and Benefits Survey report, so with a degree and a bit of experience you can really go far. Sonographers, including ultrasound technicians, managers, lead sonographers and other professionals in this field, make an average of $30 per hour including overtime and on-call work. More important than the salary, though, is the opportunity to work in many exciting locations with an excellent job outlook for years to come.
One of the biggest benefits of choosing a sonography career is the choices you will have. If you choose to go into general radiography you can opt to enter into diagnostic sonography or nuclear medicine later on. General sonographers use x-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and mammography technologies to take pictures of the inside of patients bodies to diagnose illness, treat medical conditions and look at fetuses in pregnant women.
Diagnostic medical sonographers or ultrasound technicians can enter the field after acquiring at least an associates degree from an accredited institution as required by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. These professionals use high frequency sound waves instead of ionized radiation. Careers in nuclear medicine, on the other hand, look into the physiology of patients and the functions of their cells to determine how these cells react to certain drugs and identify reasons for various diseases. This job requires a license from the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
With so many benefits of choosing a sonography career, it is worth looking into if it sounds like it could be right for you.
