Bern, A Spectacular City In Switzerland

Bern, Switzerlands fourth most populous city and a german speaking area

, enjoys a beautiful setting, with the historic Old Town city centre situated in a loop of the River Aare. This picturesque part of the city is home to the landmark Zytglogge clock, a gothic cathedral and the Federal Palace. Just across the bridge at the end of the peninsula is the Barengraben, a bear pit that has been a tradition in the city since the 16th century. It has been upgraded in recent years to make a better environment for the bears- they now have access to more space and a restricted area of the river. The area is easily walkable and with a motorhome, it would be best to park outside of the central area and walk- this also means more of the sights can be seen! German is the main language, but the Swiss are an exceedingly multilingual nation. Most will also speak french and likely English, possibly Italian. Bern, like the rest of Switzerland, is well-organised and friendly, which makes it a great place for a motorhome trip- as well as the stunning scenery for which the country is famous!

Outside of the centre, Bern has a lot more to offer. One of the most fascinating and unique of Berns many museums and art galleries is the Zentrum Paul Klee, a museum dedicated to the interesting works of one artist, Paul Klee. The centre was designed by Italian Architect Renzo Piano and takes the form of a series of 3 waves that blend in to the landscape. Other museums of note in the city include the Swiss Alpine Museum and the Bern Historical Museum.

To get a feel for the city as a whole, drive up Gurten Hill, a hill just outside of the city with a park and great views on both sides- Bern on one and the Bernese Alps on the other. There is also a park which is frequented by locals as a place to picnic, barbecue and play sports.

Bern is close to a lot of lakes, and some other beautiful swiss cities. One of these is Interlaken, a beautiful spot sandwiched between two lakes and the Oberland Alps. The impressive Jungfrau mountain rises above the city, and many mountain railways start in Interlaken, including the Jungfraujoch. Walks along the shores of Lake Thun and Brienz are a great way to see the beauty of the area, and many adventure sports are offered: paragliding, river rafting, bungy jumping and more. Summer sports include swimming and sailing, and there are snowsports on offer during winter.

The city of Fribourg near Bern is an interesting linguistic study- the inhabitants speak both French and German as it straddles the river which separates the areas of language use. Another nearby multilingual city worth visiting is Biel on the shores of Lake Biel and at the foot of the Jura mountains. The city has a medieval Old Town, and in true swiss style, a watchmaking museum!
