Room divider isnt a new concept, and it has its own little history

. They are actually the portable dividers. A Room divider is actually a screen, traditionally made of wood, which is longer at the length, and is placed in the room (across), in such a manner that it separates the room acquiring two separate areas.

In the opening lines of this article I had mentioned that a Room divider is a portable divider, and this is only possible because they are normally folding screens. This piece of furniture owes its origin to the royal rooms of China, way back in 7th century. The original Room dividers of the then period were heavy and highly flamboyant. But gradually civilization started seeing Japanese using Room divider too, which were comparatively very light and could be easily handled and moved around. Thus lighter concept gradually penetrated Asia and the European market and now that the world prefers is this Japanese style with Chinese ornamentation. They truly make the room look Royal. With designers spread all over the world, there are many Indian interior decorators and designers, who have come with the concept of bamboo Room dividers, serving equal purpose.

Now of we have to delve into the designs of the Room dividers one will come across varied designs and structure of a Room divider some are cubical partitions while some are simple pipe and drape screens. Room dividers now a day are available in varied different materials, starting from thick fabrics, till that of cotton canvas, with wood and plys heading and ending the list. The portable Room dividers are folded wall panels which are always supported on wheels, because once folded the object becomes heavy and it is better to push it on wheels.

The purpose of Room dividers are as follows:

-The prime factor of using a Room divider is to hide the areas of different usage.

-Sometimes the spaces of a room can be used more efficiently on diving.

-In commercial places Room dividers serve myriad functions, and that too saving lots of expenditure like ion a restaurant are used as shelves, and in offices used as sliding partitions.

Now coming to the types of Room dividers:

-Split mounting: consist of light plates, little lower than the roof ceiling, and these plates are normally made of wood or thin metals.

-Sliding room divider: They are sliding partitions of rollers, with 60 120 cm width, sometimes moved by hands and sometimes by power too. The power systems are either found in store rooms or large storages.

-Folding room divider: As already explained so far in detail. They are flexible partitions, contributing in providing privacy, and are folding or unfolding as per the users need. It does not take any space at all on folding up, just its folded standing area.

Thus to wind up there are hanging room dividers too, which are used as screen, curtains, window hangings or even blinds.
