By definition, the term dive dates back to 19th century London when young men sought out a livelier place to spend their days other than the gentlemens clubs, which were quite happening gigs in their time. These men formed informal clubs which gathered together to drink coffee and smoke. According to the Oxford English Dictionary this term dive refers to the 1880s in the US. It was a name for illegal drinking dens or other places with a poor repute, especially one that was located underground or in basements. In modern times, dive bars are simply bars that are less mainstream. In other words, they are the complete opposite of popular night clubs. Yes they do have bar stools, beer, smoking, etcetera, but they tend to be way more laid back than a typical bar. Dive bars consist of casual crowds who do not have to follow specific dress codes.
