Best Tips for Fishing with Live Bait

As a fisherman, when you want to lure a large variety of fish species

, live bait is the best option towards achieving this. The bait can also help the fisherman in detecting where fish is more active. Fishes like largemouth bass, smallmouth bass walleyes and catfish all get easily attracted to live bait.

There are a number of ways through which using live bait can bring impressive results.

The first thing to remember is that the size of the bait should be proportional to the size of the hook one is using to fish. The hook should not be heavy so as to allow the live bait to swim naturally across the water. This will attract more fishes of different types. This technique is best used when fishing for minnows or leaches under a bobber.

It is best to dip the hands in water before handling any live bait. This ensures that you do not remove the slime or the scales from the bait hence making it live longer. You could also want to release the fish you have caught. Dipping your hands in water will increase the chances of the fish living once released into the water again.

It is important to remember not to hook bait through the eyes. Many fishes who would have wanted to prey on it will more often than not, back away if it seems lifeless. This is because bait that is hooked through the eyes cannot see the predator and hence will not react to it. Hooking bait through the eyes can also kill it.

Just like mentioned earlier, the size of bait really matters. It is therefore necessary to carry with you different bait sizes, especially if using different hook sizes. You can test the different baits to know exactly what the fish in those particular waters like.

Keeping your bait as alive as possible will help in attracting a large amount of game. Half-dead bait, like minnow, shad or crawdad will not work well in ensuring maximum game. The best way to keep the bait alive is keep them cool especially on a hot day.

Bait like shad have a tendency of gathering in corners. This action can lessen the amount of oxygen in their gills hence causing them stress. Therefore, use a round tank to keep them alive longer.

Having a friend go upstream and churning the water so that it gets dirty as you try to net minnows will ensure they do not swim ahead of the net. The net should be as close to the bottom of the stream as possible.

During summer, the temperatures get a little high. Use a container lined with Styrofoam and a little ice frozen from creek water to store the bait. You could also use 16 ounce freeze plastic pop containers filled with frozen tap water.

Next time lures aren't putting fish in your boat give some live bait a try.
