Best Workouts to Increase Vertical

Getting a higher vertical leap is one of the most talked about topics in sports training

. No matter what sport you play, being able to jump higher than everyone else will give you a big advantage in the game. There is so much information out there that it's easy to get confused with which are the best workouts to increase vertical leap. Everyone wants to push their "special" program onto you by claiming it's the best one. Well I've been where you're at and I'm going to tell you what worked for me and what I thought were the most effective workouts to increase vertical.

First we will talk about plyometrics. When you're doing anything explosive such as jumping or sprinting, you're using your fast twitch muscles to perform the movement. So it makes sense that to jump higher, you need to build up more of your fast twitch muscles and plyometrics are the way to do it.

The program that I followed had me doing plyometric workouts to increase vertical 2-3 times a week. You don't want to do them more than that or you will overtrain and start to see negative results. To get that exact program, just visit the link at the bottom of this article.

Here are some of the best plyometric exercises that you can do to get a higher vertical:

1. Box Jumps: Explode up onto a box or a bench, drop down, and jump back up onto another box or bench. Go through this about 20 times.

2. Squat Jumps: (Should be done on both legs and one leg. I alternate between workouts)

3. Lateral Jumps: Jump sideways over a small bench or chair back and forth. I also like to alternate one leg and both legs with this one.

4. Split-Leg Squat Jumps: Get in a position like you're doing a lunge and then explode upwards using your front leg. Alternate legs between each rep.

Along with plyometrics, you also want to be focusing on other more conventional workouts to increase vertical. Some of the best ones that I use and recommend are: heavy squats, straight-leg deadlifts, calf raises, hamstring curls, and leg extensions. This will help you further build the muscles up in your legs and develop additional power to help you jump higher.

While it might seem basic, those are the best workouts to increase vertical leap. Nothing fancy or hyped up is required. Just follow a good program, eat right, and get enough rest and you will be jumping higher in no time.
