Best beaches in Mallorca

Mallorca is a born holiday destination if ever there was one

. This gorgeous island lined by hundreds of excellent beaches is a sun-seeker's paradise, but its bounty of beaches can be for more than just working on your tan.

Many types of holidaymaker choose Mallorca for their breaks, and the island has beaches to suit them all - whether you're after a lively and loud experience on the most popular beaches, or you prefer to get away from the crowds and enjoy some quiet reflection on a secluded beach all to yourself.

If it is solitude you're after, you should be prepared to travel for the luxury - either taking a hike across less travelled parts of the island or leaving the mainland altogether and taking one of the regular boat crossings to nearby islands and peninsulas. However, coming across a deserted cove and enjoying some quality time alone or with a partner isn't always a challenge, especially if you're heading to Mallorca outside of the peak tourist season.

If it's the high life you're after, Formentor beach is a popular go-to destination for the rich and famous, due to its location next to the luxury hotel Formentor. This is also one of the best beaches to brush up on your surfing, thanks to the presence of a high-rated surfing school that can take you from first-timer to experienced amateur in no time.

Heading into the clear Mediterranean waters is one of the highlights of a Mallorca break, after all, whether you get involved in active water sports or simply sit and wait patiently to see the fascinating local marine life, including octopuses and cuttlefish. There are also numerous scuba diving opportunities to allow you to get up close to the underwater wildlife.

If you're looking for Mallorca beaches further north, Alcudia beach has long been a favourite, especially among windsurfers and water-skiers. This three-kilometre beach offers enough room for visitors of all interests to relax or head into the sea, and its popularity means you'll find many restaurants and bars to keep your energy up and keep you refreshed all day long.

Biggest isn't always necessarily best though, and some of Mallorca's most modest beaches tend to be among the most beloved by locals and return visitors. Pollenca is a defining example, a relatively new beach that's slowly emerging as a favourite, while Cala Agulla beach has been embraced by the younger generation in particular.
