Beware of Fake Antivirus Programs

Microsoft recently issued a warning to users to be on the lookout for fake antivirus programs that appear to come from user's browsers

. In many cases they pretend to scan your computer telling you that you have viruses and other malware, however these scan results are totally bogus. Users told that the malicious items found cannot be removed until you buy the product. If the user decides to buy the product their information and credit card information is then stolen.

Many of these rogue security software programs are installed by deceiving the user into thinking they are installing a plug-in from a website, visiting a Facebook link or opening an image attachment in your email. Others simply install themselves by exploiting flaws in your browser while you are on a website. This is why it is not only important to keep your browser up-to-date, but also try and avoid websites that are less than reputable.

Some browsers are more secure than others. For instance Internet Explorer is frequently the target of these attacks because of its popularity. So it is vital that you keep your Internet Explorer up-to-date. You may also consider switching to another browser such as Fire Fox or Chrome, both of which automatically update. Mac's are also considered safer because they are not the targets of as many viruses and maleware programs.

One common fake antivirus is called "Antimalware Doctor", this program can be tough to remove if you get infected. Antimalware Doctor will constantly pop-up displays saying you are infected and ask you to activate the commercial version. It is 100% fake and can cause major security issues on your computer. If you feel your computer is infected with a fake antivirus, please download legitimate antivirus software to get rid of this program or contact a computer expert to help.
