Biggest Cyst Removed From Ovary Laparoscopically In India

baby Louise Brown who was born on 25th July, 1978 at Manchester in England. There are more than 30 million childless couples in India alone. There are many causes of infertility but one of the main cause is the problem in the female reproductive system. On July 25 2012 a team of surgeons led by renowned Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr. Subhash Khanna who has done more than 30000 surgeries in a career spanning over 3 decades did a rare surgery on a woman aged 28. They removed an ovarian cyst weighing 9 kg from the left ovary of the patient but still managed to preserve the ovary. This rare feat has kept the hopes of the women to have her own children alive.

The surgery was done was done at Kalyani Hospital in Gurgaon on Tuesday 24th July by a team of doctors led by Dr. Subhash Khanna and consisting of Gynaecologist Dr Nilima Chugh and Anaesthetist Dr. Sanjay Aggarwal. Kalyani Hospital which was established in the year 1997 has been the leading surgical centre for the city of Gurgaon for more than a decade and has seen more than 15000 surgeries but never before a surgery of this kind.

Kalpana ( name changed on patient request) hailing from New Delhi was married 2.5 years back and was trying to conceive since then. She was getting infertility treatment from Dr. Nilima Chugh in Gurgaon. All this while her abdomen was getting distended but she ignored it thinking it as a side effect of the medicines that she was taking. Last week Dr. Chugh decided to get an ultrasound investigation done. On seeing the report both the doctor and the patient were shocked as the patient had a huge right ovarian cyst. Dr. Chugh discussed the case with Dr. Khanna and it was decided to do Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy. The challenge was do remove such a huge cyst through laparoscopy. The team of doctors first drained the fluid from the cyst and then removed it through the tiny holes made. The patient did not have to undergo open surgery and the scars associated with it. The advantage of doing the surgery laparoscopically is quick recovery and the patient is set to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow within 2 days of the surgery.

Normally in case such big cysts the ovary has to be removed, alongwith the cyst but since the woman was in the child bearing age and had not children of her own, the doctors took the challenge of preserving the ovary while removing the cyst.

Her husband Rakesh who works in the marketing department of Khadi Gramodyog could not thank the doctors enough for this remarkable achievement. In my long career, I have operated on bigger cysts but never removed such a huge cyst laparoscopically, says a beaming Dr. Khanna.
