Bio-mechanic parameters of the trotted march
Bio-mechanic parameters of the trotted march
Bio-Mechanic Parameters of the Diagonal or Trotted March

Do you know what type of locomotion have your horse when he is on movement very closed of the classic trot?
Performing a classic trot your horse locomotion diagram should present one complete suspension of the hooves twice during a complete stride. Both suspension of a complete trot exist between each diagonal stance.
Let's see what means, for instance,a complete trot diagram.
Comments:
1 Body velocity 14.34 k/h
2 Stride length 2.26 m
3 Diagonal stance (2) 83.4 %
4 Complete suspension (2) 12.7 %
5 Diapason (stance/phase time ratio) 0.74
6 Other stance types 3.9 %
Now, lets analyse the locomotion diagram of a Pure Blood Lusitano horse, where we can not found any complete suspension during the full stride. Some other stance types like mono, triple, quadruple or even lateral may exist between the two diagonal stances. This movement is a transitional gait to the trot and main characteristics are:
Comments:
1 Body velocity 12.95 k/h
2 Stride length 2.06 m
3 Diagonal stance (2) 90.3 %
4 Complete suspension (2) 0 %
5 Diapason (stance/phase time ratio) 1.00
6 Transitional gait to the trot
7 Other stance type 0 %
The locomotion diagram of one Mangalarga Mare bread in Brazil shows a incomplete gait, called "trotted march" too.
The main bio-mechanic parameters are:
Comments:
1 Body velocity 11.81 k/h
2 Stride length 1.98 m
3 Triple stance 1.9 %
4 Diagonal stance (2) 91.3 %
5 Diapason (stance/phase time ratio) 0.96
6 - Lateral stance 1.0 %
7 Complete suspension (2) 0 %
8 Other stance type 5.8 %
9 Transitional gait to the trot
Discussion:
The classical trot has a complete suspension between each diagonal stance. But, the bio-mechanic parameters of a Pure blood Lusitano horse, measured by a non invasive process, using the Analoc-E show:
1 - The diagonal stance time is above 90% of the stride time and the locomotion diagram is like a trotted march.
2 - The diapason is the biomechanical parameter which depends on the stance/phase ratio timing is around 1.0.
3 - Some other stance types should not appear on the trot if the diagonal dissociation parameter would be zero (0), which means diagonal synchronized stance. But, it is not the common situation. Most of the gait analysis of a trot show diagonal stance not synchronized. Then, some stance types as mono (mainly) can appear during a complete stride.
If you are a horse breeder or a gait researcher, we have a lot more to talk about this matter. The Analoc-E has a data bank with more than 1500 horse locomotion analysis from the walk to the gallop, including trotter and gaited horses from Brazil and other countries.
