Biodegradable Bags in Exchange for Non-Recyclable Plastics

Environmental awareness has become a byword in every community. Because of the global climate change, more and more people are looking for ways to help support the causes of the environmentalists. These climate changes brought disasters that were never known to humans. There are flashfloods and there are droughts. There are places with less or more water but there never seems to be enough for crops. These changes altered the mindset of people on how they treat their environment. Neglect, lack of awareness, and sheer stupidity of people brought these disasters to their doorsteps. Instead of using products that take hundreds of years to decompose, people have turned to eco-friendly products.

Eco-friendly products or those that are biodegradable that found their way in the market includes biodegradable bags, sugar cane plates, bowls and cups, biodegradable corn starch utensils, biodegradable forks, biodegradable spoons, biodegradable knives, and compostable trash bags. Every year, trillions of plastic bags are used worldwide. The decomposing conditions needed are exposure to the sun, moisture and oxygen which makes degradation in landfills, slow. Stores and companies are now beginning to use different types of bags to comply with the perceived environmental benefits. One of these bags is biodegradable bags. Biodegradable bags are bags made from materials that are able to decompose under specified conditions of light, moisture, and oxygen. Most of these biodegradable bags are made of plastic combined with corn-based materials. Others are made from paper, organic material or polycarpolactone. Meanwhile, compostable trash bags are bags made plastic but have starch as fillers to allow it to degrade more easily. But it still does not lead to complete breakdown of plastic so some researchers have actually genetically engineered bacteria that synthesized completely biodegradable plastic bags. This material, called Biopol, is expensive at present. The German chemical company BASF makes Ecoflex, the fully biodegradable polyester that is used for food packaging application.

Sugar cane plates, bowls, and cups are made from 100% sugarcane. They can be use for picnics, birthday parties or whenever convenience and easy cleaning is desired. There are also biodegradable corn starch utensils, biodegradable forks, biodegradable spoons, and biodegradable knives, available to go with the biodegradable plates, bowls and cups. These utensils are made from non-genetically-modified (GMO) PLA+Talc. The corn used in the PLA is grown in China.

These products are made by the process of biodegradation. Biodegradation is the chemical breakdown of materials by a physiological environment. This term is usually used in relation to ecology, waste management and environmental remediation (bioremediation). Organic materials can be degraded aerobically with oxygen, or anaerobically, without oxygen.

Education and awareness in the area of waste and waste management is increasingly important from a global perspective of resource management. There are a lot of resources available to man today that can substantially reduce waste in landfills. But the detrimental effects that this problem raised, many turn to recycling and product sustainability. We only have one world, and it is up to us to take good care of it.
