Cesare Borgia, the Spanish military man, politician and adventurer was born in Rome. Being the second son and one of the many illegitimate children of Pope Alexander VI and of Vanova Katanei, Cesare studied initially next to Catalan scholars and later in the universities of Perugia and Pisa, from where he received his Degree of Law. In his early juvenile years, Cesare, following as the second son the habit of his era, turned to the ecclesiastical stage. While his father was still a cardinal, Pope Sixtus IV had exempted Cesare from the stain of illegitimate so that he could occupy the ecclesiastical rank. Thus, in 1491, Cesare became bishop of Pamplona, and when in 1492 his father got promoted to the popish throne as Alexander VI, Cesare was upgraded to the archbishop of Valencia and in 1493 to cardinal and was elected as the main adviser of his father. But Cesare Borgia had other aspirations and ambitions and he did not care at all to hide them as a clergyman, when he was showing a greater zeal for the secular activities, the hunting and the erotic adventures, than for the ecclesiastical work. The big opportunity to put his plans in action and acquire power was provided in 1497 with the murder of his brother Juan. Rumours of that time claim that, Cesare had been an accessory to Juans murder. HE had all the reasons and all the abilities to do it given that he hated deeply his brother. Juan, even younger, had been favoured at Cesares expense acquiring ranks that normally Cesare would have acquired. The death of Juan opened Cesares way to be exempted from his ecclesiastical rank in 1498 and to undertake the administration of military forces of his Pope father, which was previously possessed by his murdered brother. The next four years (1499 1502) Cesare Borgia, assisted from the French military force, conquered central Italy occupying one after the other entire cities. The objective of Pope Alexander VI to subjugate Romania in the popish sovereignty was altered fast in a conquering plan aimed at the creation of an independent state in the central Italy, under the sovereign of Cesare. In November 1499 Cesare Borgia occupied Imola, in December Forli, in October 1500 Rimini and Pezaro, in April 1501 Faenca. In May 1051, his father nominated him duke of Romania. In 1502 Cesare occupied Urbino, Kamerino and Senigalia. At this point, his course was interrupted by a conspiracy of his officers against him. Cesare Borgia committed the most infamous of his crimes that are attributed to his bloody-full career. Appearing compliant and appeasing towards his conspirators, Cesare called to meet him in Senigalia in order to discuss. The meeting was realised in December 1502, but it was a trap and Borgia slaughtered his conspirators. Cesare Borgia was in the apex of his power. Although he was an intelligent and capable individual and had certain charismatic qualifications, known as the most handsome man of Italy, Cesare was arrogant and unscrupulous and with his actions had created many enemies. Violence, conspiracies and the lack of scruples were typical characteristics of behavior of the sovereigns of the era; however Cesare Borgia appeared to have exceeded all precedents. The rumours that his enemies propagated at his expense presenting him as a real monster, obviously included a dose of exaggeration, however they do not seem to abstain far from the truth. In the general disapproval that surrounded him and the repulsion and fear that his actions inspired, Cesare Borgia was admired by the politician and writer Niccolo Machiavelli. Being a diplomatic representative of his homeland Florence, Machiavelli knew Borgia and his expeditions and he was so impressed by the methods of this new force in Italy, that he used him as a model for his famous political treatise, The Prince. In August 1503 Pope Alexander VI died suddenly. Without the protection of his father and deprived from the goldmine of popish money Cesare Borgia saw his glory declining rapidly. The new Pope Julius II was enemy of the Borgia family. He did not recognize the title of Cesare as duke of Romania and according to his requirement the displaced sovereigns recovered their cities, which had been occupied by Cesare. For ix months, Cesare was detainee of the Pope until in 1504 he was delivered to Ferdinand II of Spain, who imprisoned him. In 1906 Cesare Borgia escaped and resorted to the brother-in-law of the king of Navara, but he got killed fighting during the siege of a city that had revolted.About the Author:
