Many billions of pounds are spent across the world each year on research into new drugs, and the cost of bringing a new product through the research stage and onto the market remains extremely high. That is why companies ideally want to find out if a potential new drug will work as soon as possible. Being able to conduct tests at an early stage that will mark out a potential new drug as unsuitable is the ideal situation.

In these circumstances, not only will considerable amounts of cash be saved as work can be stopped on an unsuitable drug as soon as possible, but staff at the laboratory will not be spending months and months carrying out tests on a product that will ultimately fail. Instead, time, money and the resources available at the laboratory can be ploughed into other drugs that may stand a better chance of coming back with positive test results.

The above points are relevant for all companies involved in drugs research, from the largest pharmaceutical giants, down to the smallest of laboratories. For the large players, using biomarkers to cut down on research time spent on drugs that will ultimately fail can equate to savings of millions of pounds. When it comes to the smaller start-up companies, while the amounts of money involved cannot be compared, the benefits of getting results at the earliest possible stage remain the same.

Thanks to the economic climate it is now even more difficult for smaller ventures to secure venture capital funding and so being able to come up with results quickly and show financial backers progress can be critical. As well as helping to reassure them that their money has been invested wisely, it may also help to encourage them to invest further when the time comes for another round of funding. Biomarkers are changing the way that drugs research is carried out, not just in the United Kingdom, but all across the world.
