Bird Feeders - Getting Close To Nature

Bird feeders are attractive devices that contain bird foods such as seeds to attract different kinds of bird for bird watching

. These devices are also a great addition to gardens and lawns as an additional accessory to give more life to your place. It is a great way to interact with nature. You provide sustenance to the birds that keep your garden thriving and healthy in return. Most of these devices are protected from squirrels.

There are several types of feeders:

* Seed Feeders - are the most common type of feeders but varies in design. They come in trays, hoppers and tubes. The success of a seed feeder depends on what seed you use and where you place it since different types of birds have various preferences. Sunflower seed or mixed seeds are often used since they attract more birds such as cardinals, chickadees and finches.

* Hummingbird Feeders these feeders are especially designed for hummingbirds. Instead of dispensing seeds, it dispenses liquid nourishment instead that is usually colored red to make it attractive to hummingbirds. Likewise, these types of feeder are also commonly accentuated with red or incorporated with red designs to make them more attractive to birds. The red liquid used in this feeder is a sugar solution called the nectar. Hummingbird feeders come in top-fill feeders with various designs such as the sports bottle top fill, traditional top fill and the plunger-type top fill. Top fill feeders are less prone to spillage and less nectar is wasted. There are also the bottom-fill feeders with traditional designs that has an opening at the bottom of the container. Other bottom-fill feeders have a funnel-like opening where the nectar is filled. Some can be attached to your window for a close up look of the birds.

* Oriole bird feeders - are meant to attract New World Orioles. They have nectar containers that are either made of glass or plastic and are colored orange traditionally. They come in designs such as dish-like, top-fill and bottom-fill. Hummingbirds also feed from Oriole feeders. This feeder should be cleaned once in every week and must be cleaned more often when temperatures are high.

* Suet feeders these looks like a metal cage feeder that may contain cakes or blocks of suet as a feed for nuthatches, bushtits, flickers, woodpeckers and other species. Wooden logs are also drilled out to create holes where suet is inserted. Suet is high in fat which makes it an ideal bird feed during winter.

You must remember that the bird feeder is your responsibility. You must make sure to clean it on time to reduce the risk of bacteria and eliminate the risk of diseases. It must be kept clean from molds and must not be rancid. Regular disinfecting of the feeder is a must. To keep the birds from hitting the windows and lessen crowding, you must position the feeder on a clear space. Bird feeders are a great way to connect with nature and a great addition to your lawn and garden but it also comes with great responsibility.
