. Carbide cutting tools are usually quite expensive. They are also quite delicate and require gentle but firm handling and storing. Any manufacturer of carbide cutting tools will confirm that during the manufacture of any cutting tool, be it an end mill, or power drill, the material is handled with extreme care, making sure that no two pieces ever come in contact with each other or anything else. Even a small scratch or chip will greatly affect the life and usability of carbide cutting tools.

Most new cutting tools are packaged individually in clear plastic trays with appropriately sized grooves. Some small parts are often dipped in a protective wax coating, so as to protect the delicate cutting edges. And yet, the workmen in many factories do not take proper care of these tools. On an average a typical end mill can be sharpened (depending on the level of wear) about 4 to 6 times. It is imperative that whenever the sharpness decreases beyond a certain acceptable level, the tip should be ground and made as sharp as new, and any irregularities like chips and broken corners should be removed. Any damage due to bad handling means loss of more material from the tip so as to get proper sharpness. This results in a shorter length of the end mill and a shorter life too. Whatever the type of end mill that you use, whether ball end mill or corner rounding end mill, and regardless of the status of your end mill, whether new or ready for sharpening, it should be kept in the original plastic case, or something suitable. Never put it in a pile, unprotected, just because it is ready for regrinding.

One suggestion to improve the current situation is that everyone in your factory who uses the cutting tools should be made aware of the cost of the tools, and be educated as to the optimal use of your end mills to get the most out of them. Maybe you could offer an incentive for those workmen who take proper care of this expensive and vital piece of equipment. Another suggestion would be to invest in your own supply of wax dip and dip your worn end mill cutter in it before sending it out to be sharpened. This small additional cost will save you a lot of expense that could be incurred in regrinding or replacing the tool. Extra care needs to be taken when handling carbide high spiral end mills as they are more disposed to damage than other cutting tools. Any fault has a tendency to show up magnified on the part being machined. And the final suggestion would be to replace your cutting tools when they are worn out and not wait till when they fail totally.
