Birds Turning Off Friday Night Lights in Hawaii

Birds Turning Off Friday Night Lights in Hawaii

It has become a sadly frequent sight in Hawaii, during Friday Night football practice young seabirds can mistake the bright floodlights with the allure of the moon, which they use for navigational purposes. This sadly causes many of the birds to lose their orientation and fall from the sky. It has been a steadily growing problem in the island of Kauai, and now three schools in the island have stopped their Friday night practice in order to prevent the deaths of more birds. Matches have also been moved to Saturday afternoon.

This has not been such a popular decision with some parents in the region. The switch to Saturdays has really upset tradition here in these relaxed towns. Formerly sugar plantations they now mostly rely on the tourist trade and those that hire Hawaii vacation rentals, as a source of income. The tourism here mainly draws in those looking for that notion of a slice of relaxation in the pacific, free of noise and commotion, simply the easy life, and a far cry from the city life of most. This means that the island is very slight in regards to its recreational facilities and many parents fear that cutting off Friday night football is taking a large part of the local social life away.

Attendance to the games has dropped, some parents have to work and cannot make it, while others object to sitting in the intense day time heat. The heat is also taking its toll on the players who have to sweat it out under the thick padding. Special measures are being taken to prevent heatstroke and other illnesses with the players. For instance coaches are advising their teams to drink plenty of water up to three days prior to the Saturday match-ups. Some players are beginning to show the strains and there are some who have been close to concussion.

Though they have quickly been revived by ice water, it is perhaps a worrying sign of what may be to come if the youths are to continue to play in such hot conditions. The football schedule was changed after the schools were noted to be failing to protect an endangered species of bird. While parents and coaches are keen to bring back the Friday night lights it looks unlikely, many creatures are dying as a result.

For the moment it seems that Saturday football will be stuck to, until proper measures are installed to ensure that the bird's flight paths are no longer interfered with by the glaring floodlights. The country has since reached an agreement to install shielded lights that won't interfere with the birds. Yet this won't take place until next year and some Island residents are upset. Some island residents are refusing to pick up grounded birds they see as a matter of protest. They chose the birds over our children, one resident said referring to the reschedule. Yet it would seem the Saturday games are only affecting the minority on the pitch, with this sentiment serving as shallow justification.
