Birthday Cards For Those You Care About

Modern society tends to put a great deal of emphasis on achieving pretty much everything at an extraordinary pace

. We are the generation of instant gratification and we like everything to happen almost as soon as we think about doing it. Sat in front of our computers or laptops, we're just a few clicks away from just about anything we can book holidays, keep in touch with friends and family, find insurance for our cars, print photos, arrange parties, watch films and buy just about everything from a bottle of nail varnish to a brand new car. Pretty convenient I'm sure most of us would agree. When we don't have time to nip to the shops we can have someone run around the supermarket for us and deliver our shopping straight to our door and when forget to send birthday cards in time we can simply send electronic cards straight to the birthday boy or girl's inbox. Handy!

There are, however, some down sides to all of this convenient, technologically reliant living. Whist things like internet banking and online holiday booking might make our lives easier and some mundane tasks quicker, they're also a really impersonal way of doing things. The internet was once used primarily as a way to communicate with others and find out information, but now we use it or can use it for just about everything. We no longer have to actually talk to (or even see) other people if we want to buy some groceries, for example, all we need do is sit in front of a computer screen and click away. Effectively then, by cutting out the middle man we're cutting a great deal of possible human interaction out of our lives, all for the sake of saving a few extra minutes and a walk up to the high street.

Some might argue then that the internet is at least partly responsible for destroying, or at least eroding, a modern sense of community. These days, even those of us that live in small towns are often not very familiar with the person who runs our local post office. In fact, most of us are more likely to be in close contact with a friend living the other side of the world than know our neighbours well enough to have a friendly chat every now and then.

We're also loosing many of our quaint little traditions, such as sending cards in the post. E-mail means that these days most written communication is done on-screen and people aren't putting pen to paper even half as much as they used to. Many don't even go out of their way to send birthday cards or Christmas cards in the post these days and instead resort to highly popular though somewhat impersonal electronic internet cards. Not quite the same as seeing a pile of envelopes on your mat and putting up cards round your living room, is it?

However, the internet obviously isn't all bad and doesn't have to take away all the charms of old traditions. It can, for example, be used in conjunction with more traditional ways of doing things to great effect and this is particularly true in the context of sending birthday cards. Developments in technology mean it is now possible to use certain websites to create personalised birthday cards, which you can then either have sent directly to the birthday boy or girl, or have sent to you so you can write in it and pop it in the post box.

Personalised birthday cards are great for a number of reasons. First of all, personalised birthday cards demonstrate a level of care from the sender, as they have clearly taken time to pick this card and have it personalised, rather than just grabbing one from a selection of bog-standard cards at the local shop.

Personalised cards are also well received because they are unique to the person who receives them. It's possible to personalise a staggering variety of images in a number of different ways and so personalised cards allow you to create cards that are not only unique to the recipient, but that reflect their tastes or interests in some way. A birthday boy or girl with a sweet tooth, for example, will love cards that have pictures of their names spelt out in sweets and football lovers will love cards that combine their name with a passion for the beautiful game.

So when a loved one's birthday rolls around, think about using the internet to create some great birthday cards that are sure to please when they're opened and will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
